ABOUT THE COVER

A good way to look at the Model “R” is to mentally insert yourself into the past; into 1949, 70 years ago. As we look at the tractor today, it looks kind of like other big John Deere Diesels of the Two-Cylinder Era, but at the time there was nothing else like it. The “D” was much smaller and its styling was entirely different. Most of the rest of the lineup were row-crop tractors. The closest in appearance was the styled Model “AR”, but in comparison the “R” loomed over it.
This photo was taken by a Deere & Company photographer at one of the first Two-Cylinder Expos held at the Waterloo Airport.
