ABOUT THE COVER

Near the extreme west end of the “downtown” Waterloo Tractor Works complex, which no longer exists, was Department 8A, car loading for rail shipping. As can be seen here, rail flatcar surfaces were at the same level as the factory floor, making loading a safe and efficient proposition. Final assembly and wheel installation were right next door. Taken during later New Generation 20 Series production, this specific location was about 400 feet northwest of where the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum is located today.
Proper loading for correct delivery was far more difficult than might be expected. The Traffic Department had to anticipate rail activities and car movements from Waterloo to the final destination.
Most of the former Waterloo Tractor Works is now wide open fields, which the editor believes should have markers at various locations indicating past sites of particular interest, including this one.
